Dusty’s Ride: Tampa to LA and Busts!

I’m very, very happy to announce a new 4sqDay partner: The 2ndBasemen. They are not an underground hip-hop crew, nor do they actually have anything do with baseball. They are, however, amazing. As their mission statement says:

“The mission of The 2nd Basemen, Inc., a registered charity, is to enrich the lives of both women and men diagnosed with breast cancer (and their families). We provide, financial assistance to help cover medical bills, family bills and enrichment.”


Who can argue with that? But as if fighting breast cancer wasn’t enough, they do it in unusual ways: skydiving, running,  jumping in the riving, beign on Oprah, mechanical bull riding, and most famously, doing a such things while being men who wear obnoxiously pink bras.  It. Is. Awesome.  Get a little taste by watching the 2nd Basemen slide show video.

The 2nd Basemen was founded by Dusty Showers, a Tampa renaissance man and outrageously confident bra model. I’ve met with Dusty and he is funny, sharp, and indeed, a foursquare user. If you get the chance, definitely hang with him.

The timing of this announcement is great, because Dusty is about to undertake his most ambitious fund-raising event. He is riding from Tampa, FL to Los Angeles on a bike. And not a Harley, but a real bike. As in, a 10-speed bike. That you pedal.

On July 28, 2012, Dusty Showers plans to hop on his bike in Tampa, Florida, wearing a pink bra of course, and make his way to Los Angeles, where he hopes to meet up with Randall and his honeybadger who have already put ther paws in to support The 2nd Basemen. A trip estimated at 2500 miles over the course of 35 days. He is hoping to bring along a film student as a traveling companion to capture it all on film.

Fit By 4 Square Day Takes Long-Term Commitment!

It can be difficult to change your life or change a habit. Getting fit by 4 Square Day 2013 is an amazing opportunity to do just that! Fad diets won’t work. Over-exercising won’t work. Starving ourselves won’t work. Unfortunately there’s no secret pill or powder.

Changing a habit or transforming how we relate to an issue can be hard especially when it comes to weight loss goals. It can be simple to talk about, but not always easy to execute.

How many times do you make a health resolution before it sticks?

Is this the 3,654th time you’ve made the same resolution? You’re not alone. Take some time and really tell the truth about what happened the other 3,653 times you tried this. When it gets hard, do you talk yourself out of really wanting that commitment anyway? Or when someone calls you out, do you get nasty enough that they never ask you about it again? Me too. The more we’re willing to tell the truth about that and clean it up with the people in our lives, the more support and power we’ll have.

Let other people know what you’re up to with your weight loss goals.

Pick people who aren’t afraid to tell you when you’re being a jerk. Tell them WHY it’s so important for you to reach your goal – the more you open up, the better. Why did it matter that I change how I eat and exercise? On the surface, I want to look good and feel hot in a bikini. When I look deeper, it’s also because I want to be able to have a family and I’m scared to death that I’ve done damage I can’t repair to my body.

Share the deep part of your “WHY”. Remember it’s all a process. If you knew what to do and how to do it, you would have done it already. Use the people you trust and consult the experts. It is possible to get the results you want. We are here to support you in any way we can!

From the Archive: Fit By 4sqDay!

This was originally posted on our temporary blog, which we set up in response to the hacking and now serves as our archive. In the upcoming weeks, we are going to be updating and reposting highlights. I’m pleased to report that so far I’ve lost 12 pounds. :)  -Nate

 

For the last three years, I’ve dealt with the same issue during this time of year… the 4sqDay 5. Maybe you’ve experienced it, too. The hustle and bustle of getting things ready for 4sqDay, the stress of everyday life, the fact that I don’t work out like I used to… followed by all the eating and drinking and being merry on 4/16 all combine to result in tighter fitting pants, an unnatural fear of getting on the bathroom scale, and the gradual suspicion that I am, in fact, becoming a huge blob.

But this year, there was no disputing it. The evidence of my poor health choices was obvious to everyone… especially in this picture:

Tampa’s real Mayor, Bob Buckhorn is the dapper-looking man on the left, who has shown leadership in using foursquare as Mayor. I am the wide-looking guy in the 4sqDay shirt on the right. There is no denying it. I’m the largest I have even been. The heaviest I have ever been. And I need to change my ways.

Think about it. Do you see a little bit of yourself in my chubby profile? Did you have one too many cupcakes this year? Did that awesome bulking up routine fall victim to a series of awesome check in drink specials?

Well, this year is DIFFERENT. This year, instead of gaining 5 pounds by next 4sqDay, we all are going to get in the best shape of our lives. Ladies and Gentleman, with the help of foursquare, each other, and all manner of new apps and gadgetry, we are going to get you Fit By 4sqDay.

This is the plan:

  1. Think of a challenging but reasonable health goal that you’d like to a achieve in 1 year. It could be anything. Lose Weight. Complete a half marathon. This is not a crash-diet or three day fast. This is changing you habits and lifestyle to meet your goals in one year that can set you up for future years of success.
  2. Go to Fitocracy and sign up for the Fit By 4sqDay Group. Here you will find tons of foursquare fanatics of all different fitness levels ready to join you, support you when you are weak, and give you mad props when you succeed.
  3. Think about what you can do to help the group succeed. Have a favorite health app like RunKeeper, Nike+, or fitsquare? Write up a guest blog post and we’ll publish it. Are you hugely successful with Weight Watchers, going Vegan, or Paleo? Tell us why it is working. When chatting health and fitness, use the #FitBy4sqDay hashtag, so we can follow and share.

And to show you that we are serious, we have some professionals on board to keep us all motivated. I’m happy to introduce Kristin and Kevin Votta from Fitness-Tek (4sqDay partners).  They will be posting useful information and be active in the Fitocracy group. We are excited to have them on board.

All of this is free. The only thing you have to lose is a few pounds. So who is with me? Who wants to be a monster on the foursquare court next year?

Storytelling via Foursquare – Media in Latvia

This is another post that was written some time ago by one of our favourite  foursquare bloggers,  Mareks Matisons (@marruciic) but got misplaced in the transition to the new blog. I absolutely love reading about foursquare in Latvia! -Nate

 

One of my all time favorite fairy-tales starts with something like “it happened in those old days when the good times were..” – and I love the fact that my short story will cover the “good old times” when nobody expected Carmine Gallo book to be printed..

By the way – the book Power of Foursquare unveils dozens of examples how Foursquare can be used..

So – back to the “good old times” and to the small country near the Baltic sea – Latvia.

We have an extremely popular news portal delfi.lv. It has grown from a simple news site to a complex informations gateway – with national news, stories from abroad, pictures, e-mail possibility etc. Just like a CNN – just some hundred times smaller. Still, Delfi is the most visited news resource in Latvia and has longest history.

And they started to play with foursquare.

But not the way some brands are doing, which is by writing comercial tips or sharing stories nobody really would like to read.

Delfi has built it’s foursquare presence by being humorous and educational in the same time.

Some of the tips are truly with the message “You won’t be expecting this“ - thats how they named brand’s list on foursquare.

Some of the places listed are not traditonal public places. One example, The Poetry House, is a abandoned building where on the walls of the building you cans read some fun stuff – a modern poetry critisising government. You can remember a certain liquor store which will be held in the collective memory because of first mass riots in our country.  And Delfi also did write the tip on the one of famous bridges in our capital city with a grinning smile – this place will be remebered for the local terrorist who climbed up to the bridge and demanded sweets during the debate with authorities.

Does it sound that Dlefi has been focused more on a criminal deeds and tried to memorize them in foursquare? Nope! There are lots of good memories too and fun places to count in while planing a slow foursquare walk in Riga.

From one perspective – the most known internet resource does not need a recognition in a social network which is just gaining the popularity in the country. From the other – only with foursquare our collective memory can be expanded, because in the news site you specifically need to know the element what to search. Foursquare tips are giving the possibility to tell – where and what happened. And actually bring the history out to the streets.
