As Foursquare Day nears, many of us within the community have used this past year to challenge ourselves and our fitness. Originally started by 4sqDay founder, Dr. Nate, FitBy4sqDay has been a quest by foursquare users to reach new fitness goals and live in a healthier way. While many typically start refocusing on fitness after the November and December holidays as the New Year turns over, the foursquare community embraced the fitness challenge much earlier in hopes of greater results and so much more. Some started in spring or summer of 2012; others started just a few weeks ago. Certainly, fitness is a life-long journey, and we [the 4sqDay community] encourage you each step of the way. Will You Be Fit By 4sqDay?

With 2013 in full swing, April and Foursquare Day are nearing. If you recall back to last year, Nate challenged all foursquare users to get in shape by Foursquare Day! Some started right away; others waited until the start of 2013. Fitness and healthy living are not the easiest things to accomplish, but achieving each has its own advantages. Have you started on the journey towards healthier living? Are you eating better and exercising more? Or have you wanted to start but simply couldn’t find the time or energy? Well, it is never too late to start. With warmer conditions (for many of us) coming up in the very near future, now is as good of a time as always to get things going in the right direction. Of course, if you are nearing your goals, be sure to stay on track and push to reach them. Foursquare Day is about one month away, so let’s look and feel our best as we celebrate yet another great year! Lastly, be sure to use foursquare to help motivate you to reach your fitness goals. Personally, I like to use the highly-contested [foursquare] mayorship at my local LA Fitness [gym] as fuel and motivation, ensuring that I stick to my workout routine. Luckily, I have a few people vying for this title, so I have to stay on top of it, and I certainly won’t be cheating myself.

Fit By 4 Square Day Takes Long-Term Commitment!

It can be difficult to change your life or change a habit. Getting fit by 4 Square Day 2013 is an amazing opportunity to do just that! Fad diets won’t work. Over-exercising won’t work. Starving ourselves won’t work. Unfortunately there’s no secret pill or powder.

Changing a habit or transforming how we relate to an issue can be hard especially when it comes to weight loss goals. It can be simple to talk about, but not always easy to execute.

How many times do you make a health resolution before it sticks?

Is this the 3,654th time you’ve made the same resolution? You’re not alone. Take some time and really tell the truth about what happened the other 3,653 times you tried this. When it gets hard, do you talk yourself out of really wanting that commitment anyway? Or when someone calls you out, do you get nasty enough that they never ask you about it again? Me too. The more we’re willing to tell the truth about that and clean it up with the people in our lives, the more support and power we’ll have.

Let other people know what you’re up to with your weight loss goals.

Pick people who aren’t afraid to tell you when you’re being a jerk. Tell them WHY it’s so important for you to reach your goal – the more you open up, the better. Why did it matter that I change how I eat and exercise? On the surface, I want to look good and feel hot in a bikini. When I look deeper, it’s also because I want to be able to have a family and I’m scared to death that I’ve done damage I can’t repair to my body.

Share the deep part of your “WHY”. Remember it’s all a process. If you knew what to do and how to do it, you would have done it already. Use the people you trust and consult the experts. It is possible to get the results you want. We are here to support you in any way we can!

From the Archive: Fit By 4sqDay!

This was originally posted on our temporary blog, which we set up in response to the hacking and now serves as our archive. In the upcoming weeks, we are going to be updating and reposting highlights. I’m pleased to report that so far I’ve lost 12 pounds. :)  -Nate

 

For the last three years, I’ve dealt with the same issue during this time of year… the 4sqDay 5. Maybe you’ve experienced it, too. The hustle and bustle of getting things ready for 4sqDay, the stress of everyday life, the fact that I don’t work out like I used to… followed by all the eating and drinking and being merry on 4/16 all combine to result in tighter fitting pants, an unnatural fear of getting on the bathroom scale, and the gradual suspicion that I am, in fact, becoming a huge blob.

But this year, there was no disputing it. The evidence of my poor health choices was obvious to everyone… especially in this picture:

Tampa’s real Mayor, Bob Buckhorn is the dapper-looking man on the left, who has shown leadership in using foursquare as Mayor. I am the wide-looking guy in the 4sqDay shirt on the right. There is no denying it. I’m the largest I have even been. The heaviest I have ever been. And I need to change my ways.

Think about it. Do you see a little bit of yourself in my chubby profile? Did you have one too many cupcakes this year? Did that awesome bulking up routine fall victim to a series of awesome check in drink specials?

Well, this year is DIFFERENT. This year, instead of gaining 5 pounds by next 4sqDay, we all are going to get in the best shape of our lives. Ladies and Gentleman, with the help of foursquare, each other, and all manner of new apps and gadgetry, we are going to get you Fit By 4sqDay.

This is the plan:

  1. Think of a challenging but reasonable health goal that you’d like to a achieve in 1 year. It could be anything. Lose Weight. Complete a half marathon. This is not a crash-diet or three day fast. This is changing you habits and lifestyle to meet your goals in one year that can set you up for future years of success.
  2. Go to Fitocracy and sign up for the Fit By 4sqDay Group. Here you will find tons of foursquare fanatics of all different fitness levels ready to join you, support you when you are weak, and give you mad props when you succeed.
  3. Think about what you can do to help the group succeed. Have a favorite health app like RunKeeper, Nike+, or fitsquare? Write up a guest blog post and we’ll publish it. Are you hugely successful with Weight Watchers, going Vegan, or Paleo? Tell us why it is working. When chatting health and fitness, use the #FitBy4sqDay hashtag, so we can follow and share.

And to show you that we are serious, we have some professionals on board to keep us all motivated. I’m happy to introduce Kristin and Kevin Votta from Fitness-Tek (4sqDay partners).  They will be posting useful information and be active in the Fitocracy group. We are excited to have them on board.
